The Daily Grind

The “Daily Grind” is different for everyone. If you’re homeless, it means a certain set of things. If you’re a copper, it means other things. This is about “people” - whoever and whatever they may be - going about their daily.

A guy. Walking along the promenade. He might be homeless, he might be an undercover millionaire.

“Don’t shoot the homeless!” is a common saying in the photography world.

I say, “Why not?” They’re people, and I shoot people.

I don’t look down at a homeless person. I don’t pity them (Because to pity someone - anyone - takes their power away), I just see them as people.

But this is not a project about the homeless. There may be some, but they’re photographed as people, not a subculture or the subject of an essay.

A couple of old guys getting a break, simples.

But one thing I will say, is that society defines itself by the way it treats its marginal elements…

This busker / homeless guy was singing “What a wonderful world” - which is why I have it on my home page.

But, for every homeless person / busker - whatever you call them, there are 100 people just getting on with it. Maybe they’re smiling ear to ear, maybe they’re hurting inside. Maybe they are just worried about getting their kids to playgroup on time.

Keeping the wolf from the door.

In shops, clubs, pubs, cinemas, offices…

Just like this barber…

But, sometimes it’s good to take a break and maybe nick a bit of free WiFi…

Or take your dog out for a walk… In your jacket…

Seems to be a popular thing. Don’t think it would work for me. I like Rough Collies…

Or just relax with your iPad (Other tablets are available) and take a moment away from others…

No matter the time, no matter the place.

It seems if you’re looking for action in Weston, the place to go is the train station - an exodus (Well, maybe not an “exodus” ) of commuters leave every day.

It’s perhaps not Paddington at 8:30, but it is WSM at 8:33 - and everyone is heading OUT of town.

And commuters come in all shapes and sizes…

But “The grind” might just be about getting the shopping in.

Or finding enough loose change under the pier to pay for your parking.

Or just getting on with it…
