Down on the Beach

Miles of sandy beach, a pier or two and other tourist hotspots draw the crowds in by the busload. Airshows that draw in tens of thousands, the occasional festival, car show, etc., etc. all do their bit during the summer. But what happens when the crowds go home?

#When the last bus leaves.

And just away from the beach, things are little better…

(See the next page…)

The classic view of Weston super Mare.

Sun, sea, smiling faces and ice-creams.

With the Grand Pier at the centre of its crown…

And when it is closed, many attractions and cafes are closed too.

But the pier is not an all-year round attraction.

And, despite its omnipotent presence, the rest of the town seems to wither during the off-season

Even the “world famous” donkey rides go AWOL…

And it is important to realise that these small businesses are mostly run by locals…

And the weather often hinders the adventurous from visiting the beach in the off season…

Any temporary attractions are dismantled and taken to more profitable climes.

Beach Huts… A political and economic disaster. Seldom rented, and over priced, resisted by locals…

Deck chair hire is a quaint - but ineffective way to raise money.

And the weather - while not overly vicious - detracts from what is left on the beach…

And the weather does continue to deteriorate.

And some very strange practices abound. Like moving the sand from one end of the beach to the other…

What permanent features are along the promenade, lie deserted.

And lorries continue their trek up and down the shore…

Venturing past the pier - towards the East, the weather continues to abuse visitors.

Google “Birnbeck Pier” - historical, closed, abandoned, focus for an impotent fight for rejuvenation…

And the cafe associated with it - you’ve guessed it - is closed during the off season…

But not all humour is lost, overlooking the derelict pier is this little trinket.

But even the once prominent street art is slowly being reclaimed by vandalism.

But on days the weather doesn’t drive visitors indoors, there’s always sandcastles to be built.
